One note program problem

2026-02-05T00:03:39.37+00:00

I am experiencing performance issues with the OneNote app on Windows 10. Even after syncing all notebooks to OneDrive and ensuring they are up to date, I notice significant lag, occasional “Not Responding” messages, and delays when writing with a pen, which wasn't present in the 2016 version with me.

I have tried clearing the cache and adjusting pen settings, but the issue persists.

Could you please advise on steps to optimize OneNote for smoother pen input and overall faster performance on my device?

    Hello عمرو احمد محمود غباره,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Q&A forum

I can see that you are experiencing performance issue with OneNote app on Window 10, whereas significant lag happened, occasional “Not Responding” messages appeared and delays when you write with a pen.

Here is what you can do to improve your OneNote performance:

Disable background features in OneNote that affect pen latency:

    • In OneNote > Settings > Options and turn off:
    • Automatically save and back up
    • Ink effects (critical)
    • Convert handwriting to text automatically
    • Enable math assistance
    • Enable spellcheck while handwriting

These options add processing during pen input, not after. Slowing down your OneNote.

Also, try reducing the ink rendering load, still in Options:

    • Set Pen thickness to the smallest usable value
    • Avoid pressure-sensitive pens if possible
    • Use solid colors only (no glow, pencil, or effects)

Visual pen effects are rendered in real time, this is also a major lag source.

Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help.
