Laptop restarts everytime I try to boot from an usb drive

Hi!

Since yesterday I've been trying to do a clean install on my MSI BRAVO C7VE laptop. The issue is that it struggles to boot from the USB, even though I made all the settings I could think of in the BIOS (Secure boot off, Fast boot off). Firstly, I tried using a drive made with the Media Creation tool that I knew worked. Wasn't paying that much attention to the first couple of restarts because I thought it was normal. First time it got into the setup, I walked through the steps, formated the C partition(wanted to keep the rest of my data unharmed on the other partition from the same ssd), the setup started and it suddenly restarted again. It took few other restarts but it got back in the setup, did the whole thing again, and it restarted yet again.

In the morning, I came back to it and the behavior persisted. I tried an EC reset and a BIOS update to maybe go back to the actual default settings but to no avail.

After that, I managed to get my hands on a thumb drive that had Medicat installed in order to try and diagnose anything. It had a portable version of Win10 so i accessed it to see if my other data was still intact which it was, but suddenly it just restarted again on its own. I found a boot repair tool in the medicat suite and tried to use it and, while it started the process to load the app, it once again rebooted and bricked the usb, which is now unusable.

I decided to make my own Win11 boot drive using Rufus with GPT and UEFI with something(I cant remember the setting) as I have seen it's recommended. Yet again, no change in it's behavior.

The SSD and RAM are fine and i dont think it s the temps either.

Has anyone ever encountered this kind of behavior? I also have a clip of this happening, maybe I will try to attach it down the thread.

Hi there! My name is David. It’s a pleasure to help you today.

Thank you for posting your question and describing your problem so well.

Does your laptop also restart when you enter the BIOS, after some time?

Did your laptop work fine before, did you have any Operating System installed?

What you describe, sudden restarts and a USB drive getting damaged when connected to your laptop, is not normal behavior, and in this case it does not seem to be related to Windows.

Considering what you have already tried to solve the issue (configuring, updating BIOS, resetting EC, using several USB drives), the issue you describe could be directly related to your laptop itself; Some component might not be functioning correctly.

In this case, what I can suggest and what is most recommended is that you seek assistance from the device´s manufacturer or from your trusted technician, since more exhaustive tests are required on your laptop for a more accurate diagnosis.

You can request assistance from MSI at the following link:

At the bottom of the site, look for “Web Ticket.”
