Hi @Peter Hancock,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.
Regarding the update status of your Surface Laptop, encountering a Stage 2 of 2: Cleaning Up notification at 0% is a common occurrence during significant Windows 11 updates. This phase involves the system deleting temporary installation files and archiving older system data to optimize your storage. To be more specific, while it may appear stuck, this stage is often resource-intensive and can take a considerable amount of time depending on the update's complexity. The progress bar may stay at 0% for a long duration before suddenly jumping to completion.
Additionally, below is some recommended troubleshooting steps:
- First, allow for sufficient time. I recommend waiting at least two hours while keeping the device connected to a power source. In many cases, the process is still running in the background.
- Force a hardware restart: If the screen remains unchanged for more than three hours, you should perform a forced shutdown. Press and hold the Power button for approximately 30 seconds until the Surface logo appears, then release it.
- System Recovery: Upon restarting, Windows will typically attempt to resume the update or safely roll back the changes to restore your desktop.
If your laptop fails to boot to the desktop after the restart, or if the update hangs repeatedly, please let me now and any error messages or screenshots would be greatly appreciated.
