Copilot not respecting my privacy settings

Copilot in Edge continues to automatically activate the "Context Clue" and "Copilot Suggestions" options without my permission.

I'm not pasting any URLs or selecting open tabs based on chat box suggestions (which is already a privacy violation), so this isn't the well-known Microsoft's trick to force the user to activate these options. They are simply activated automatically whenever I open the browser. This is an abuse.

    Hi @jraylan,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience with the Copilot settings in Microsoft Edge. We understand how important it is for your privacy preferences to remain consistent across your browsing sessions.

When features like "Context Clues" or "Copilot Suggestions" appear to re-enable themselves, it is often due to the way the browser synchronizes settings or handles version updates, rather than a manual override of your choices. Here are a few technical reasons why this might be occurring:

    • Browser version synchronization: Microsoft Edge receives frequent updates to improve security and AI integration. During these updates, certain "Sidebar" flags or personalization settings may be reset to their default state to ensure the new version functions as intended.
    • Profile sync across devices: If you are signed into multiple devices (such as a laptop, phone, or tablet) using the same Microsoft Account, a setting changed on one device can occasionally sync back to your primary browser, overriding local configurations.
    • Context-Based prompts: In some instances, interacting with certain AI-enhanced features or "Summarize" buttons can trigger a one-time permission prompt. Accepting these prompts can sometimes update the global privacy toggle for that feature to "On" to maintain a seamless experience for future requests.

Recommended steps to ensure settings persist:

    1. Check Sync Settings: Go to edge://settings/profiles/sync and ensure that "Settings" and "Personalization" are configured as you prefer. If you want a specific device to remain strictly manual, you may consider toggling "Sync" off for that specific machine.
    2. Verify Managed Settings: If you are using a device provided by an organization or school, ensure there isn't a Group Policy in place that automatically enables these features for productivity purposes.
    3. Clear Browser Cache: Occasionally, a corrupted local profile can prevent settings from "sticking." Clearing your browser cache and cookies can sometimes resolve persistence issues.

Additionally, to ensure your feedback is heard and contributes to the future development of Copilot in Microsoft Edge, you’re welcome to submit feedback directly to the Microsoft engineering team by using the Send feedback option within the Edge app and sharing your concerns there. I truly value your feedback, as it helps our engineering teams refine the balance between helpful AI features and user‑controlled privacy.

No other device with this account. I've disabled every single toggle.
    It's a private account.
Unless Edge updates every time i start it, i don't think this is the problem.
I've reset the server sync data and still reenabling.

Microsoft has enforced the use of a outlook account and has been enforcing AI in every single app, there's no reason for believe it's not enforcing the privacy settings too. In fact, I've confirmed this same behavior in a familiar pc as well.

The only alternative it give us is leaving windows platform. But thanks for trying, we know it's not your fault, or any non executive employers fault.

For those who might reach this point and not understand, it's important to emphasize why this is a major concern.

Granting Copilot permission to access your browser data also grants it permission to spy on your applications that use EdgeWebView, such as WhatsApp for Windows, since this is also distributed with Copilot. Therefore, you have no choice but to provide your data to Copilot, even if it's not your intention.
